Elbow pads from Bauer, CCM and Warrior should be replaced once cracks, breaks, torn seams, worn straps or heavily compressed padding appear. Can ice hockey elbow pads be used for other sports?
Elbow pads are designed specifically for ice hockey, but they can sometimes be used for inline hockey or certain martial arts, as long as the fit, mobility and coverage are suitable. In some cases, associations or referees provide information about which pads are allowed in the respective sport.
How important is mobility in ice hockey elbow pads?
Extremely important: elbow pads must allow free arm movement without compromising safety. Slim designs like Bauer Vapor or CCM Jetspeed provide maximum mobility, while more protective models like Bauer Supreme or CCM Tacks offer stronger coverage. The correct size (see table) is essential – only a properly fitted pad provides reliable protection.
How do I measure correctly – and what do the size labels mean?
How to measure: Use a tape measure from the forearm (near the wrist) over the elbow to the upper biceps. Alternatively, measure the circumference around the elbow. Compare your results with the size chart below. Intermediate (INT) is common with Bauer and fills the gap between Junior and Senior sizes.
